Need rains

According to Alexander Kolesov, mushrooms will still appear near St. Petersburg in August. Now it has rained in the region, and the myceliums are underground, and for this reason they will not deteriorate.

Biologist Glazkov agreed with the weather forecaster. According to him, mushroom pickers should hope for rain, since the heat before was so strong that it even affected snakes.

“Even snakes suffer. A few days ago I made a video about snakes - vipers. They are active only at night and a little in the morning. And at eight or nine o'clock in the morning the vipers can no longer be found. Although they are cold-blooded, the heat is also unpleasant for them. They go into swamps and hide in holes. You can’t even find them in this heat,” Glazkov explained.

He clarified that last year he walked through the swamp in rubber boots, but now everything was so dry that sneakers were enough for the hike.

“A mushroom is a fruiting body. Moisture is required for its formation. Now there is little of it in the forest; it has only just begun to appear with the rains. If the rains continue, there will be mushrooms,” the biologist concluded.

On July 20, Veronika Tarbaeva, an employee of the Russian Ecological Academy and the head of the public organization “Natural Union”, predicted the appearance of mushrooms in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region closer to autumn. In her opinion, city residents should not worry about high temperatures. After the heat, the soil will have time to recover. But for this you need to wait for rainy weather.

The heat ruined the blueberries

Pavel Glazkov explained to NEVSKY NEWS that the abnormal heat also hit the berries.

“The blueberries have already really suffered. It's a shame that it initially bloomed well and began to ripen. But due to the dry summer, the berries are very small. It is there, but very small. This, unfortunately, is a fact,” the biologist noted.

He added that berry picking lovers still have a chance. There are now a lot of cranberries in the swamps, which are still green. It is usually collected in the fall - in September and October.

“If there is precipitation, there will be a good cranberry harvest this year. There will be blueberries, too. It grows mainly in the swamp, and from there it still takes moisture,” Glazkov said.

Almost no mushrooms

As a summer resident from the Priozersky district of the Leningrad region told the editors, there are practically no mushrooms at the moment. The woman collects them in a strictly defined place, and last year, which turned out to be a fruitful year, it was possible to collect two baskets there in half an hour.

According to the chief weather forecaster of St. Petersburg, Alexander Kolesov, who is an avid mushroom picker, where it rained, there were already mushrooms this summer. First of all, this concerns the Boksitogorsk and Tikhvin districts of the Leningrad region.

“In June, when it was humid, chanterelles were collected there,” the weather forecaster explained.

Biologist Pavel Glazkov, who runs the author’s channel “A pair of each creature” on Youtube, said that he was recently in the forest and found only three mushrooms there, which turned out to be dried out.
