  • About tonality

Each voice type has its own tonality. People feel comfortable singing in the natural zone of the vocal apparatus. It is called primary, that is, two or three upward notes are added to the spoken timbre.

It is worth considering that the voice may sound different in each piece, so it is better to sing in your working range. This, in turn, is what we call the range of notes to which the vocalist is able to give beautiful coloring and high-quality sound. This is not about the full range of notes that a person can hit with their voice. So, based on the working range, it is worth choosing the key for a certain piece.

    Timbre

The timbre of a voice is its individual color and brightness. The voice may sound rich or soft, the color may be dark or light. Teachers distinguish between the following types of voice timbre: sharp and soft, chest, head, mixed.

A vocalist who has a soft and pleasant timbre to the ear will be more in demand than one who has a harsh and off-putting style of singing. In fact, the timbre of the voice determines whether a person can practice vocals.

Each of us has a unique timbre, so we can easily identify the sounding voice of one of our favorite singers thanks to its individual characteristics.

    About tessitura

Tessitura is the part of the range in which the singer is comfortable singing. That is, it can be comfortable or uncomfortable for a certain voice. It happens that a song may be comfortable for one performer, but not for another, although both have the same range. This means that the part of their range for comfortable singing is different. Therefore, the wider it is, the more convenient it is to sing.

Male bosses are more likable than female bosses

The female boss (audio track) was, according to the participants, dominant, unattractive and cruel. This caused irritation (15%) and mistrust (13.3%), but most of all indifference (35%). The majority (58.3%) agree with the name of this type and really believe that such a woman has a high social status, most likely she is a boss. The most interesting thing is that the participants gave a very detailed description of their appearance and character. The person who speaks in the voice of the “boss,” according to most, is a middle-aged woman in a formal suit, conservative and unfriendly. Of the famous people, most respondents classified Angela Merkel and Maria Zakharova as this type.

But the male boss (audio track) evoked slightly different feelings among the experiment participants. He seemed dominant (28.4%), but inviting (35.8%) and calm (13.4%). The overwhelming majority (74.6%) aroused confidence in him. Therefore, his appearance seemed quite pleasant: he is a middle-aged man, self-confident, calm, high-status, attractive. Vladimir Putin and Sergei Lavrov were most often cited as examples of famous men of this type.

This is an interesting result because it contradicts those found in a similar study in Canada. Gillian O'Connor, a professor at Concordia University in Montreal, writes in a 2021 paper that higher-pitched male voices are more trustworthy, both generally and in specific situations, such as in the context of romantic relationships.

“The Gray Mouse”, or How Philosophers are Characterized

The female voice of the “philosopher” category (audio track) presented itself as anxious (30%) and dependent (26.7%) and caused mistrust and anxiety. In the descriptive part, she was given a portrait of an insecure subordinate: she is a modest employee, sight-reading and dependent on the people around her, a thin girl dressed like a “gray mouse.”

The male philosopher (audio track) provoked other associations: he presented himself as sensitive and calm. Among the respondents, it evoked in almost equal proportions a feeling of calm (26.9%), mistrust (20.9%) and indifference (17.9%). To most of those listening, he appeared in the role of an actor, writer or subordinate. Respondents described him as an adult, confident man, but with a sly smile and a sly look.

Masterminds are loved, but not trusted

The inspirational woman (audio track) seemed optimistic to most, and many also noted her sensitivity and peacefulness. Describing her portrait, respondents highlighted such features as activity, smiling, young age, and a rather thin physique. Paradoxically, such a seemingly pleasant woman aroused mistrust (18.3%) and skepticism (18.3%) among listeners.

This type of male voice (audio track) was also perceived by the majority as optimistic (52.2%) and inspiring (22.4%). He is closer to forty years old, a charismatic and emotional man, he looks nice and is attractive. But despite this attractive portrait, the inspirer evoked complex emotions among respondents: along with positive trust (32.8%) and calmness (19.4%), this voice aroused skepticism (24.2%) and irritation (37.9) among listeners. %). By the way, Sergei Bezrukov was considered an ideal example of a male inspiration.

    Technique Tips

Moreover, the performer must learn the correct singing technique. The wrong one distorts the voice. To make it sound beautiful and convincing, you need to pay attention to the following technical features:

    • You should breathe with your diaphragm, that is, your stomach should rise when you inhale and fall when you exhale. This will give you more control over your pitch.
    • Maintain proper posture while singing. It is better to keep your neck straight and relaxed. If you stand straight, it will be easier to breathe.
    • The back of the throat should be open while singing, and sing the vowels clearly.

Anyone can submit their own singing technique. If we talk about vocal technique, then development will depend on the presence of an ear for music, concentration of memory and attention, lung capacity and characteristics of the vocal cords. In fact, no matter what physiological characteristics and vocal abilities a person has, it is possible to develop a singing voice.
